A six-story 1867 townhouse on a quiet one-way street — among Boston's finest small inns, run by its hosts as their own home.
Our historic inn is among the finest of luxury Boston hotels. In our six-story townhouse you will find spacious guest rooms that meet your desire for comfort and sophistication — and we are happy to welcome you into our home and share what we love about our city and our vibrant neighborhood.
Tucked away from the main avenue on West Brookline Street, the inn is minutes from Copley Square, the Public Garden & Common, the Freedom Trail, Restaurant Row, Fenway Park, the Museum of Fine Arts and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.
“You will feel like a local at the Clarendon Square Inn.”
Rachael RayCondé Nast Traveler named it one of the “Best Big City Bed & Breakfasts,” noting its “contemporary decor, warm colors, vibrant artwork.”

The house at 198 West Brookline Street was built in 1867 by builder Silas Merrill for Josiah Loring Fairbanks, founder of the J.L. Fairbanks Company, a Boston stationer. After the turn of the century it fell into disrepair, like many South End townhouses.
Following its purchase in 1998, Stephen Gross and his crew spent a full year on an extensive renovation, preserving ceiling medallions, moldings and doors and blending them with modern finishes. Clarendon Square opened its doors in March 1999 and has hosted thousands of guests from around the world.
The inn is the life's work of hosts Stephen Gross and Bobby Ciletti, whose own travels inspire the guest experience. To keep the historic staircase intact there is no elevator, so all rooms are reached by stairs.

Each room is personally designed, with a private marble bathroom, designer fabrics, original art, Frette linens and robes, and Molton Brown bath amenities. Complimentary fast Wi-Fi throughout.

Spacious rooms with a comfortable sitting area and one queen bed with Frette linens. A private marble and Porcellanosa tile bathroom (new in 2021).

A private floor in a 720 sq ft apartment-sized suite, ideal for romantic weekends: a queen bed alcove overlooking the city, a full living room with large TV and desk, a 12 ft mahogany barrel-vaulted dressing room, a soaking tub for two and an 8 ft walk-in shower with dual heads. The suite is offered seasonally — check availability for your dates.
Give a stay in the South End. Gift certificates are available online.
Open all year, the roof deck Jacuzzi hot tub is the pièce de résistance of the property — just steps from your room. Some say the best time is early morning at sunrise; others prefer the city lights. Bring a bottle of champagne.
The rooftop sun deck and hot tub are open 24 hours. For guest safety the roof is closed in extreme weather and winds over 20 mph, so access is not guaranteed.
Downstairs, enjoy a glass of wine in the parlor or library. Concierge services, dinner reservations, tickets, tours and laundry services are available.

Boston's premier residential and dining district: Victorian brick, trees and gardens, cobblestone streets, galleries and chic shops. Our small one-way street keeps us secluded from city traffic and sound while Copley Square, Newbury Street and the Boston Common are minutes away on foot.
Here for a conference at the Hynes Convention Center or business in the financial district? It's all accessible. We suggest skipping the rental car — Boston is America's favorite walking city.
Two T stops are close: Back Bay Station (Orange Line) and Prudential (Green Line). Uber and Lyft cover farther destinations like the BCEC and Harvard Square.
Steps from the inn are James Beard Award–winning restaurants, celebrity chefs, and some 40 restaurants on Boston's “restaurant row.”
No meals are served at the inn. Complimentary in-room coffee, tea and morning snacks are provided, and a full breakfast is available at many cafés a 4 to 6 minute walk away.
Our concierge is happy to make dinner reservations for you.
